HP-UX, Progress and QAD MFG/Pro Installation & Configuration Guide
AEI has done over 20 QAD MFG/Pro installs. Our experience installing the
product dates all the way back to 1995!
Most of the installs we do are on HP-UX (it just seems that HP has done a
good job of selling to the business server market).
In order to maintain consistency in our service to our clients, we have put
together a document that describes in detail how we like to perform MFG/Pro
installs. The document starts from first principles and assumes that HP-UX,
Progress and QAD need to be installed from scratch.
The document provides very detailed steps for:
-
Installing HP-UX 10.x and 11.x on a new HP PA-RISC server (including how to
inventory and organize hardware, perform an install you can live with, how
to set up disk arrays and how to patch the system).
-
Installing Progress 8.x and related products using a consistent
install strategy (directory layouts, etc.).
-
Setting up & Testing JetDirect Printers. Also included are detailed
steps for Lantronix print servers (somewhat dated).
-
Defining Printers in QAD MFG/Pro. THis includes the exact hex codes
to get the output you need.
-
Tuning HP-UX. HP-UX is very conservative in its use of resources.
There are some tunes that can be applied that will have a noticable impact
on throughput. This section relates mostly to HP-UX 10.x.
-
Performing an Inital QAD Installation. This includes the actual
install, tailoring the installation, creating new-empty fixed length databases, loading the Pilot and Help databases, etc.
-
Auto-Start Up and Shutdown Scripts. These scripts can be used to
automatically start/stop the database when the machine is brought up or is
shut down. These scripts work!
-
Nightly Back Up. Need a simple, effective back up script for MFG/Pro?
Included is a script we've used for years to drive fbackup. It
takes care of shutting down the database, backing up all database
components, truncating the .bi file, restarting the database,
etc.
-
Managing QAD Users. Here we describe how to create a template to make
adding new users a snap. This includes user start up scripts, a start menu,
etc.
-
Finalizing Your Install. No install goes 100% perfect. We suggest
procedures for identifying and any installation issues that might arise.
We also include a tutorial on how to drive HP's Volume Manager from the
command line. We assume that you have MirrorDisk-UX. Appendicies
include:
-
How to set up tftp to better manage your network devices.
-
How to enable SAR to do system performance monitoring and review.
-
Some hints on setting up TCP/IP access to your Progress/QAD system.
